Background of the Study (400 words)
Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions affecting young adults globally, and its prevalence has been rising in recent years. One of the factors that has been linked to the onset and persistence of depression is low self-esteem. Self-esteem refers to an individual’s overall sense of self-worth or personal value, and it plays a crucial role in emotional well-being (Oluwaseun & Okonkwo, 2024). Individuals with low self-esteem often experience feelings of inadequacy, helplessness, and hopelessness, which can significantly contribute to the development of depression.
Young adults are particularly vulnerable to depression, as this life stage is often marked by significant transitions, such as academic pressure, career choices, and relationship changes. Low self-esteem during this period can serve as a risk factor for depression, making it essential to understand the relationship between these two psychological constructs. The impact of low self-esteem on depression is particularly concerning in Nigeria, where mental health awareness is still evolving, and stigma surrounding depression remains prevalent.
Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Sokoto State, is a leading center for mental health treatment in the northwest region of Nigeria, providing care for individuals with various mental health conditions, including depression. However, there is limited research investigating the specific relationship between self-esteem and depression among young adults in the region. This study aims to explore this relationship by focusing on patients at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Sokoto State.
Understanding how self-esteem affects the mental health of young adults in Sokoto will provide valuable insights into the prevention and treatment of depression. Moreover, the findings will contribute to the development of therapeutic interventions targeting self-esteem enhancement as part of a comprehensive approach to managing depression.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Depression is a growing concern among young adults, with a wide array of factors contributing to its onset, including low self-esteem. Young adults with low self-esteem often struggle with feelings of inadequacy, which can lead to or exacerbate depressive symptoms. However, there is a gap in research concerning the relationship between self-esteem and depression specifically among young adults in Sokoto State, Nigeria. Despite the high prevalence of depression in the country, the influence of self-esteem on depressive symptoms in this population remains underexplored.
Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Sokoto, treats many young adults suffering from depression. While various factors contribute to the mental health challenges faced by this demographic, low self-esteem is suspected to be a significant factor. However, the extent to which self-esteem contributes to depression in young adults remains unclear. Understanding this relationship is essential for developing targeted interventions to prevent and manage depression in young people.
This study aims to investigate the relationship between self-esteem and depression among young adults receiving treatment at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Sokoto. It will provide insights into the psychological mechanisms through which self-esteem influences depressive symptoms and guide the development of effective treatment strategies for depression in young adults.
